Learn to paint
Abstract Landscapes
Join me on a journey of creative exploration as we learn how to simplify complex landscape scenes and transform them into expressive, abstract artworks. This course is designed to help you let go of rigid rules and discover a more intuitive, personal way of responding to the landscape.
Through a series of guided projects, you’ll be encouraged to see the environment through your own creative lens, building confidence in your mark-making and developing a visual language that feels authentic to you.
We’ll be working primarily with acrylic paint, alongside other water-based media, to explore how subtle shifts in value and colour can suggest depth, atmosphere, and detail—without the need to worry about traditional perspective or realism.
Abstract Landscapes is an invitation to loosen your grip, trust your instincts, and discover new ways of responding to the landscape through paint. This online class is designed to help you move away from overthinking and perfectionism, and instead develop a more expressive, intuitive approach to painting landscapes—one that feels personal, confident, and creatively freeing.

Throughout the course, you’ll work through a series of thoughtfully designed projects that build skills gradually while encouraging playful exploration.
We begin by simplifying complex ideas, experimenting with different aspect ratios, and learning how the shape of your surface can influence composition, movement, and mood. You’ll also work within set time limits, creating small, fast paintings that help quiet the inner critic and strengthen your ability to make bold, instinctive decisions.
As the course progresses, you’ll explore intuitive landscape painting without reference images, allowing colour, value, and mark-making to guide the process. We’ll focus primarily on acrylic paint, while also discussing how mixed media can be introduced to add texture and depth. You’ll experiment with a variety of brushes and tools—moving beyond the familiar to create dynamic, layered marks that bring energy and atmosphere into your work.
In the final project, you’ll take one of your earlier experiments and expand it into a larger-scale artwork, pushing past comfort zones and embracing confident, expressive painting. This is where everything comes together—composition, colour, intuition, and movement—resulting in a piece that feels resolved yet alive.
